Article by LAQ Professional Member, Susan Butcher, Principal of Lymphatic Services Australia, in which she shares shares information on Bioflect – a specially designed and flexible garment that can be used as part of an overall plan for managing lymphoedema, lipoedema and auto immune conditions.

Let’s start with what Bioflect is and what it does.

Bioflect is a risen weave specially designed garment. It’s worn as part of a management program for Lymphoedema, Lipoedema and auto immune conditions, where the lymphatic system has been compromised.

It provides a micro-massage effect on the skin to assist with lymphatic movement and softening of tissue.

The Bioflect garment is not a replacement for medical compression wear, but rather an alternative in the management of lymphatic disorders.

Personally, I discovered the benefits of the garments when researching alternatives to assist with my own lymphatic oedema condition.

So, what are the advantages of using Bioflect garments:

  • Large selection of sizes – catering for people 50kg – 200kg
  • Relatively easy to don
  • Breathable fabric and comfortable against the skin
  • Unable to tolerate heavy compression (Lipoedema)
  • A night garment or under clothing
  • No circumference measure required – just height and weight measurements
  • Can be worn while using the Sequential Intermittent Compression Pumps.

The range of Bioflect garments include:

Leggings – Very popular, wearing as tights under a top (ending at the ankle).

Pro leggings – Same design as the leggings however going over the heel ending at the toes. Better suited when swelling or cuffing at the ankle (as seen in Lipoedema).

Vest – May be useful in softening scar tissue associated with mastectomy, lumpectomy surgery. May be affective with some types of abdominal issues.

Arm wrap – May find useful as an alternative to compression garments (but not a replacement for medical compression). A lot of ladies wear the wrap under a top when playing sport or as a night garment.

Capri – This legging only comes below the knee on most people. Good to wear when exercising or in hot climates. Only recommended where there is no oedema in the feet or ankles.

Shorts – May be useful after surgery to soften scar tissue. Great for sport wear as they end above the knee (as with bike shorts).

Bioflect garments are available in both black and nude and are comfortable and effective in assisting lymphoedema, lipoedema, other oedema and lymphatic issues, lactic acid, aching legs, vascular conditions, post surgery and rehabilitation.

They are great for everyday wear, active wear, and used by athletes e.g. cyclists and runners and worth checking out if you are looking for that extra support.
